Freedom

A small carrack approached the Kon Village docks from the Fulgori River to the north. Its captain turned the wheel gently to starboard and began the sequence to dock. A small storm had begun, and the captain took a sip of the wine from his flask as he stared at a town glowing with fire and smoke. He blinked and looked back at the flask. “Have I really had too much already?”

He put the drink back in his jacket and rubbed his eyes, hoping to clear away the amber glow. As his eyes regained focus, he saw that it wasn’t just his imagination. The whole village had been set ablaze. He bellowed, “Y-yunah!!”

Some rustling was heard in the cabin as a young Wavegut maiden burst forth. “What is it?!” she shouted.

Bleu merely pointed to the approaching harbor. “Oh no…” she said softly.

“Get me to shore as quickly as you can,” Bleu said gravely. “I’m going to look for Jethro.”

Yunah quickly dashed into the cabin and returned with Bleu’s sabre. She traded places with him as he bound his sword to his belt. The captain of one jumped down onto the main deck and took hold of the forward sails as Yunah gently nudged the ship into the harbor. Bleu furled the sails one by one as they approached. He ran his fingers through his greasy blonde hair and placed his wide-brimmed hat back on his head.

The boat came to a soft crash against the wooden docks of Kon Village Harbor. He steadied himself before leaping ashore and sprinting toward the town. He shouted back to his companion, “Ready the ship for immediate departure!”

“Aye… sir!” Yunah said nervously.

“I’m not about to lose more money on this, old man,” he muttered in his head. “You better be safe and sound. I’m in enough debt already.”

Iron Belly grew restless in his earthen prison. “This simply shall not be so!!” he boomed.

His attitude could not be further hot towards his situation. He and the guests had been herded and trapped underground in a pitch black cell. There was very little room for movement, and the air had begun to grow stagnant. The crowd was pressing in on him from every side. But after the booming voice, many slowly shifted away, not knowing what to think. There were cries of confusion and anger, and wails of sadness. Many thought they were doomed, especially after the mysterious tremors that came and went.

Lodus managed to find his way to the loud voice in the darkness. He nudged Iron Belly’s arm, “Overseer, what are we going to do?”

“Hm? Is that you, Lodus?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Where’s Adam?” Iron Belly asked.

“I’m not sure, sir.” Lodus replied.

“Adam Terrus!!” Iron Belly bellowed. The whole crowd grew extremely quiet in fear. “Adam Terrus, where are you?!” There was no reply.

Lodus interjected, “He doesn’t appear to be here, sir.”

“Hm,” he said. “And I bet young Borkan would have already given light were he here…” He bellowed once more, “Are there any Dawneye here?!”

“Good idea, sir! If we could at least see!” Lodus said.
